Hello dear FOSSians, It's my pleasure to announce that Walter Bender, will be arriving to Kathmandu for one week on May 7. As many of you know, Walter is a long-time Sugar developer and a cofounder of Sugarlabs who has working tirelessly to demonstrate the value of active learning using educational technology all around the world.
Apart from spearheading the activities of Sugar Labs, Walter is the heart and soul of Turtle Art, a programming environment for kids young and old, that has evolved from the Logo programming language developed at MIT. While in Kathmandu, Walter, with the support of OLE, will be giving a two-day Turtle Art workshop for grade 5 kids on May 9-10 at Bloom Nepal school in Patan. Besides Walter, also Bernie Innocenti who volunteered at OLE a few years back will be joining for the event as a mentor. The workshop is scheduled to conclude at Bloom on Saturday May 10 at 3 pm. After the workshop, Walter is planning give a talk to those from the local FOSS community who are also interested in the intersection of technology and education. Last week, I learned from Hempal Strestha that some of you have even been involved in Sugar development and have collaborated with Walter in the past. I think that you might be especially interested in meeting Walter and learning about the latest developments in the Sugar community from him. For example, a recent project I personally find very interesting is Sugarizer, port of Sugar to HTML and Javascript which can run in any modern browser. We are planning for the presentation to last about one hour and I would like to ask those of you who would like to attend to let us know which specific technical topics/projects you would be most interested in learning from Walter about. Please respond to this thread with your ideas and we will coordinate with Walter. After the presentation, we will hold a social event at a nearby restaurant during which you will have an opportunity to meet with Walter and talk to him informally. We will provide more information about that once we settle on an appropriate time and location. I am very thrilled about Walter's arrival and looking forward to spurring some stimulating discussions.
