No need to work on manual process like the one shown in that link. It is the most basic one. Gitlab/Githubs provide features to add ssh-keys by users themselves in their own dashboards once they are registered.
And the thing is, you won't feel any difference (apart from the URL) if you are using the online version of gitlab.com or hosted version of gitlab (except few Enterprise Edition features, which won't make any difference in most of the cases). Also, if SSH-keys are problem (which isn't in most of the case) then there always is "http/https" version.
