Today, I have setup desktop environment for my qemu archlinux image.
Which desktop environment is everyone else using and how is their experience?
All the desktop environments are
dependent on 'one' of the following:
1. GTK
2. Qt
All the desktop environment are
dependent on
* DBUS
* systemd
When we install 'Arch Linux', both
system components are installed by
default.
Thus, i have chosen a novel approach,
which i call it as a 'no desktop
environment' aka NDE.
NDE
* a window manager 'dwm'
* install the following
- xorg-xinitrc
- dmenu
- leafpad
- flashplugin
- pepper-flash
- firefox
- inkscape
- gimp
- mplayer
Thus, one has
* multimedia
* gui toolkit,
* window manager
* browser
* editor
This is light weight and also avoids the
'consumption' goodies that are peddled
in rich desktop environments without
bringing any productivity benefits.
The bells, whistles and tunables that
people keep playing with are a classic
example of 'bikeshedding'.
Having written my point of view, one
utility i use from LXDE is
* 'lxrandr'
very useful when setting up display
with external LCD projector.
