I love the colored lines concept, the colors help the eye track. But the
colored lines need to be bolder to stand out from the white background.
I'm not sure if best answer is to pick line color from a different
palette, add a pixel or so to their width (subtracted from the existing
white space I think), or some combination of the two. IMHO it isn't
critical that the lines have the *same* color as the branch they
represent, but it would be nice if it were a strongly related color
which would reinforce the branch identity.
I also like the idea of the circles (and by extension a limited
repertoire of additional shapes) to indicate some property of a node.
From a design standpoint it looks nice, is a good use of space, and
could add information without adding what Edward Tufte calls "chart junk".
