For the sake of Vim, I've swapped ~ and Esc before. That worked pretty well, actually. Take an old keyboard you've typed on for a long time until the keys have been worn shiny. If there are keys near the central area of the keyboard that are still textured, they're prime candidates to be swapped with farther-away keys that have gone slick. On my current laptop, my Esc is glass, whereas my ~ is sandpaper. My CapsLock is likewise factory-fresh except where I bump against the edge of it, whereas my left Ctrl is smooth as can be. And so forth. Also I see my right Ctrl and Alt keys are virtually unused, as is my "Windows" key on the left, so these are free to use for Meta or other special purposes. -- Andy Goth | <andrew.m.goth/at/gmail/dot/com>
