Hi Michael, Don't worry, no implied cost or obligations. Our intention is for this basic service to always be free. We'll almost certainly add paid function later but it will be additional functionality (private repo support, security checking etc..). We might send you a couple of surveys on what you find useful though ;-)
On the metadata front we are launching the label-schema.org project today. We'd certainly welcome thoughts from your team.
