It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centered on a plain green background. Guetim Commune is one of the five communes of Espinho Municipality (q.v.); it had 1532 inhabitants in 2001 and covers 1,76 km². See also < http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guetim >. The etymology of Guetim is obscure and none of the elements of the CoA is canting — the cross of the Christ Knights’ Order (blazoned as «in 18th cent. style») relates to local church jewllery (as given to Sérgio Horta by the local gorvenment and on < http://www.jf-guetim.pt/freguesia/historia3.html > the page about heraldry at the official website), as maize and and grapes / wine symbolize local farming; the silvery and *green* wavy base does symbolize the sea, but the nearest seaside is 3 km away (far fetched for an entity under two sq. kilometers!) and located outside the commune (see map in the official website < http://www.jf-guetim.pt/localizacao.html >) though Sérgio Horta quotes the local government to state that it «symbolizes the Altantic Ocean, which washes the commune» — yet it does not. -- António MARTINS-Tuválkin ____. <[email protected]> | ()| Não me invejo de quem tem |####| PT-1500-111 LISBOA carros, parelhas e montes | +351 934 821 700, +351 217 150 939 só me invejo de quem bebe | ICQ:193279138 http://tuvalkin.web.pt/ a água em todas as fontes | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- De sable uma fonte e bordadura escaqueada de jalde e goles, por timbre a bandeira, por mote o 1º verso acima, e por grito de guerra "Mi rajtas!". ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Flags of the world" group.
