Yeah, I understand that. I think also that many of the universities
would prefer to see a brand behind their projects. They'd prefer to say
that they have a project from Novell/Redhat/Intel/etc. -- names that
they can then market to people looking at schools. Yes, they want names
the parents know -- which means you need a stock symbol ;)
I don't want to convey the message that all is lost, I just want those
who try to expect a little difficulty for that reason. I know that a
main reason I was initially successful is that I knew the professors
involved. I've looked at trying to talk to some other unis that are
local to me (physically) and wasn't taken seriously.
So, I think if the GNOME foundation were to have a "program" that might
add some legitimacy to the proposals. And it's probably easier than
finding jobs for everyone at companies working on GNOME ;)
