With a big help from Davide the bug was repaired. 
It took a while to find out that my 3COM network switch didn't allow
writing a new image from my Windows XP machine over our network to the
FoxServe board. We solved it by installing the SDK in Parallels
Desktop on my MacBook and connecting the MacBook directly to the
FoxServe board. 
If you try this don't forget to bridge the network connection of your
Parallels configuration.
