With a little research into the HD44780 interface I found that pin 3 is the contrast adjustment. see http://home.iae.nl/users/pouweha/lcd/lcd0.shtml#pin_assignment The special resistor  with  pin 3 'in the middle' is a variable resistor. Just like the volume adjust knob on your radio. So this variable resistor is used to adjust the contrast. Peter RandomOrbit schreef: Reference: http://www.acmesystems.it/?id=8021 Hi.
