Terry,

I am going through the same problem at the moment. We just purchased 5
replacement printers.

You can replace the HP Paint Jet with a Lexmark Optra45 printer that has a
minimum of 16MB of RAM. This printer emulates both PCL5 and Post Script 2. If
you want to print from a WP30 with normal resolution, then you will need a
minimum of 24MB of total RAM. The base printer has 8MB, but there is one
optional memory slot that you can fill with an EDO RAM SIMM (tin color
connectors) - 32MB max. The printer comes with a parallel port connector, but
you can purchase and install an optional Lexmark Triport adapter card that will
provide a serial connection. In our case we used the serial option and plugged
the cable into that previously connected to the Paint Jet.

Foxboro document B0400SF - Rev. B will give you more information concerning the
Lexmark printer. You can get the driver disk (K0173UW) from the Foxboro web
site. See the trouble shooting printers section. The document is a little
confusing. If you have 51 stations, then you will need to do the 51 software
installation mentioned on page 8. You will also have to do the COMM10
installation mentioned at the bottom of page 8. Step 3 of the COMM10
instructions mentions the PxDEV parameter. We used a parameter setting of 10
for our application.

If you do not have any WP30s, then you might actually get faster response if the
printer (parallel) is connected directly to one of the Sun stations. Please
check this out first, but I think I also heard that a HP inkjet (say HP 895) may
actually work faster than the Post Script printer when connected directly to the
Sun station. However, I must admit that I was confused when I heard this,
because I thought the Post Script printer should be faster. Caution - I don't
think a WP30 can print to a printer that is attached directly to a Sun
workstation.

We have inkjet printers connected directly to a Sun station on our 2 ethernet
based Foxboro systems and they seem quick. One of the printers is a HP870 and
the other is a HP1600CM. The Lexmark printer connected to the COMM10 is very
slow, but it is due to the slow COMM10. I have not tried the Lexmark directly
attached to a Sun workstation, but I suspect that it would also be quick.

I hope this helps.

Hi Gang,

I have a few HP Paint Jet printers hanging on my I/A system. Rumor is, ink
cartridges have been discontinued for the printers. Does anyone know if the
cartridges are still available and where?

If not, what color printer would you suggest replacing them with. I have
them tied to COM10s which are really slow. The printers are about 100 feet
from the COM10s.

Thanks,
Terry Thibodeaux
