Our site philosophy is that no critical control functions should be allowed
across the LAN, we pass lots of "information" points around alright but stop
short of one block relying on another over the LAN, this approach was adopted
in our early days when we didnt know how reliable the LAN would be, we still
dont really know but we havent been aware of any LAN failures (its fault
tolerant). I guess our questions now should be how much traffic (and what is
the traffic distribution vs. time) is on the LAN and how much can it take
before it exhibits control problems, in the real world. We are constantly
tempted/pressurised to use this route, after all, its cheaper and faster to
do so and if its there, and its a comms option, well, why not ?
