It is a tool for backing up your harddrive while the system is running.
However, it uses the Micro RFS facility of the I/A Series (aka rmount) to
access the files. Since Micro-RFS supports a maximum file length name of 14
characters, OFHA is not so useful on files with more than 14 characters.
Historical Note:
In the beginning of Networked File Systems there was NFS from Sun. Sun made
it freely (cheaply?) available and it was adopted by almost everyone except,
of course, Microsoft.
A little while after NFS, AT&T, the then owners of the UNIX name and source
code, developed their Remote File System (RFS) and bundled it into UNIX
System V Release 2. SVR2 also was limited to 14 character file names.
Guess what! The I/A Series was based on Venix a derivative of SVR2 that ran
on Intel microprocessors. Sadly, the lovely design of early Intel
microprocessors limited programs to 64K of data and 64K of code unless
compilers did some tricks. The Venix compiler did tricks for code size, but
not data size. Therefore, RFS would not port straight over and it had to be
adapted for this limited architecture. Hence, Micro RFS.
As time passed, we moved to Sun boxes (eventually to the merged BSD and
System V release known as Solaris 2). We needed micro-RFS to allow
interoperation between our old stuff (Venix based) and our new stuff (Sun
based) so we ported it.
Now you know where the 14 character name limit of the OFHA comes from.
Aren't you sorry you asked?

Alex Johnson

Would someone mind telling what OFHA is?
Thanks,
Neil Martin

Hi Ron,
I have looked at the OFHA several times and never decided to
implement it.
I would like to get a copy of your .pdf document if you can send it
to me.
Thanks in advance,
Stephen Murray
