You can spritz the paint like you would water, but your paint will forever be harder to wash off. What I will do, though you may see it as a waste of paint - I don't do it often - is scrape off the surface with a plastic knife and mix it right there on the sponge. Time consuming and difficult, but avoids paint contamination.
Another thing I do to make glitters stick better, and to help powders look better and last longer, is to keep some (I use Ben Nye Liquiset) in a little spray bottle and lightly spray the finished result. This has little, if any, affect on your cake makeup but it makes the glitter sticky, and helps powders stay in place and improves the color of powders some.
