How many people here offer the option of photos at their parties? I do
and I got the idea from another face painter here in the town I'm in.
Well, I just replaced my photo printer (with an easier to use and more
portable one - a Canon Selphy ES30 - I can't recommend it enough since
it's only one cartridge and there's no paper or anything to mess with
- it's all in one 50 print cartridge). In an attempt to get back to
the basics I'd considered getting rid of this service, but I decided
they're enough of a hit with the people who do get them... which is a
small portion.

Well, last night I was thinking "I'm getting these kids taking
something home that's showing off my artwork but it has no indication
of who I am". So, thinking through creative workflows, I decided I
needed a way to watermark these prints - and still have the whole
thing take no more than 20 seconds of my time, TOPS per picture.

Previously I have been using PictBridge with my camera hooked to the
printer to make direct prints. Here's my new workflow I'm hoping to
try out this weekend, yes it does involve a laptop. I use a Canon EOS
Rebel XT and a MacBook with Adobe Photoshop CS3. You'll have to adjust
for your software:

0. Setup - connect camera to computer, printer to computer, create a
watermark overlay the same size as your pictures with a transparent
background, copy it to the clipboard, have EOS Utility, it's save
folder, and Photoshop open, set EOS Utility to "remote shooting" mode.
All this is done before you start and only takes a couple minutes to
setup if the overlay is already created.
1. Shoot the picture - it will show up in the folder on your computer
immediately if remote shooting is set properly.
2. Open the picture in Photoshop (I have it set to use Camera RAW so I
can make a quick brightness adjustment if needed)
3. Cmd-V to paste the overlay
4. Hit print
5. Start painting the next kid while that one waits for their picture

Total time on your part - roughly 15-20 seconds per picture. Almost
identical to PictBridge direct printing.

Value - who knows yet, but I'm hoping they're a good marketing tool.
If they prove successful, I'm going to bring down the price of on-site
instant photos to increase their popularity (since they're helping me
now...).

Happy painting,

Mark U.
