Growing up in the 70's on the US side of the border (1,000 Islands, NY) meant we saw lots of Canadian change in the stores. We could usually slip a quarter or less through at par, but anything larger and most stores would charge a 25 cent per dollar difference. The exceptions were the stores looking to get Canadian tourists in. Oddly, I don't recall any face painters at the summer festivals, although I ~am~ hoping to paint at the Pirate Days in Alexandria Bay this summer.
