Hello Everyone Important: If you can, please write back via E-mail and let me know if you will be attending, and what time, that would be just wonderful.
Have been receiving some E-mail and phone call excitement about this Friday's NYC Face Painting Jam. Below you will find the same information that I've sent you a few times, but feel free to E-mail this jam notification to other face painters who might be interested. I am very happy to announce that Christopher Agostino, of Transformation Facepainting NYC, and Instructor at Face & Body Art Convention 2009, will be treating us to a 1/2 hour demo during the jam, beginning at 5:30 PM. If you will be arriving while he is speaking, PLEASE arrive gently and just ease on in as quietly as you can. Hugs, kisses, hellos, and questions can wait until after. Every moment of what he is offering is, I feel, precious. ************************************************************************* DEMONSTRATION DESCRIPTION Dayglos, Metallics and Interferenze from Kryolan Specialty Makeups to add instant pop to everyday faces A very practical 1/2 hr class in how to use specialty make-ups from basic application and tricks of technique to design concepts like how to make Dayglo designs look good in regular and UV light and how to get the maximum effect with minimal makeup expense. l demonstrate some special uses with the primary focus on how to incorporate specialty make-ups into regular face and body designs. If you don't, but you have others, you're welcome to bring them at least to try and work with them. I am very excited about the jam. There will be some people who might not have ever painted before, so please welcome them if you have experience. Remember that unless you have insurance coverage, you will not be able to paint (except for your arm, of course!) There ought to be enough models for most of us to happily face painting. This jam is about face painting and not geared towards henna, temporary/glitter tattoos, etc., but suggestions for inclusion in future jams of other body art are more than welcome, as long as face painting is the man focus of the jam. As an example, someone can be invited to give us a really good demo on glitter tattoos. Hopefully, the jam will be well-received and we can continue at Fantasma to have future jams!!! An important reminder for many of us is the sad fact that there are face painters, some new, who are frozen with fear at jams and conventions and need to be helped along to actually take out a brush and sponge and BEGIN painting (yes, even on their arms). Many of them say, "That's OK. I'll just watch." Some of them this time will have the legitimate excuse of not having insurance. I challenge all the others to bring your kits and don't look back (unless someone offers you their back to paint on!!! You will ALWAYS be supported no matter what type of work you do, and face painters who want to move along in the art form - THIS IS THE BEST VENUE for you to try out NEW things, and ask others how you might improve a line, blending, even the small stuff!!! If you want to paint, but what I've said describes you, please come see me - One of the things I do best is support new painters, painters wanting to improve but becoming fearful/intimidated when they feel other, "better" face painters are watching. In one E-mail, I might have mentioned that Wolfe Bros, in the smaller sizes, will be available for sale, but that has since changed and they will not be. However, I have been told that the Magic products at Fantasma Magic will be 10% off for people saying they are attending this jam. Please call me if you have any questions: 347-268-5245. I will be racing downtown from a gig that ends at 2 PM, and hope to be there at least 1/2 hour before. I might have one more last minute E-mail, but as of today, the JAM IS ON!!! Oh, and if you feel like contributing any snack food, you are welcome. (But soda and water are available in vending machines.) ********************************************************************************************** NEW YORK CITY FACE PAINTING JAM at: FANTASMA MAGIC Entrance on W. 33rd St. WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE Hosted by: FANTASMA MAGIC Organized by: Deva - 347-268-5245 FRIDAY, JUNE 5th FREE ADMISSION 3 PM - 8 PM LOCATION: Fantasma Magic, located across from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station Upstairs in same building as Sbarro Restaurant, entry on W. 33rd St, NYC, 2nd floor. . Fantasma Magic is located across from Madison Square Garden and Penn Station --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE PRINT OUT ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS SO THAT YOU WILL HAVE IT ON YOU AND WILL NOT HAVE TO CALL ME AS TO WHERE THE JAM IS LOCATED ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Below is the same E-mail I have sent to some of you at least twice, and now repeating it. I returned from the Face & Body Art International Convention on Monday morning and it was all quite overwhelming. The face & body art was simply incredible, jaw dropping. LET ME KNOW BY WEDNESDAY BEFORE THE JAM, IF YOU ARE COMING: Here are some reminders for Jam: would like to get a good idea of about how many people are coming, including your model. Models can be your children (not babies or 2- year olds who could disrupt any speaker or disrupt your painting or learning experience). Bring your kits, if you have one. We will have to be packing up FAST and out of the place by 8 PM. I am going to be reminding people of this and become a nuisance around 7:45 PM. As you might have noticed, there is now no fee to come to the jam - in exchange, I ask that you PLEASE clean up after yourselves and don't make me or others have to do it. There will be areas to throw our garbage away. We do not have to clean, just clear up. You get the picture. Better to leave your car home, but if you must at least now you have an extra $10 towards parking. I am told that it could be possible to find yourself a parking space on 9th or 10 Ave, maybe try below W. 32nd St on the side streets. Just remember where you are parked. Try for a longer than 2-hour parking meter, otherwise, you will have to go and feed it, or better yet, find a free parking space. If we behave ourselves, maybe the owners will allow us back on a regular basis. I want to thank Pnina for the Fantasma Magic jam space connection, as she originally talked to the owner about having a space for a jam. There is a soda and bottled water machine at Fantasma Magic. I do get into the finer details in my reminders, and ask kindly request that you do not bring meals with the smell of fish or rather, "stinky" food. Strange request, isn't it? It's just that when we are all together sharing, fish gets in the way. LOL. (I'm sure there are other things, but this is all that I can think of now.) Please remember that the space in which we will be having our jam will become a children's party space for the following 2 days at Fantasma. Come prepared to paint, have fun, meet new people, connect with friends we have not seen for awhile and attend Christopher Agostino's Demo. This particular jam is not geared towards the business side - a whole day could be given over to that discussion and sharing. We pretty much know what our "weaknesses" are in terms of our face painting, so here is an opportunity to gain in strength. Techniques of blending, fine line work, swirly curlies, dots, stripes, specific designs - can be shown by quite a number of us who will be there. Don't be shy to come and say, "I'd like to practice my wild cat faces." "I need direction on the proper way to hold the brush for specific techniques." "What is the best posture so that I don't harm my back or neck?" "I'd like to perfect my dots, my blending, etc." You can also bring with you, special designs that you have admired, but find it difficult to complete - for whatever reason - and practice with us. Here below, are repeats from my last e-mail Fantasma Magic requires that anyone face painting a child or Fantasma customer needs to have insurance coverage. This means that you will bring your certificate of insurance with you, because I will need to know who does and who doesn't have. If you can't find it by the time you leave, I intuitively will know whether you have insurance. If you do not have insurance, you are most welcome to come and participate by being an observer - and one can learn TONS by just walking around and watching how other people paint, checking out the kits that we have, and how we work with children. Fantasma Magic will be advertising the event so that we have children with their parents coming through for our jam practice. Remember to bring your cards and any advertisements for your own business that you have, but models are welcome, too - so that we have a constant source/ supply of people to paint. However. Fantasma is advertising this jam so they will also attract customers for them AND US. Remember to tell parents that you are practicing at a jam, not at a gig and that you would like to take your time painting their child, so if they are not in a hurry, 10-20 mins is a reasonable time for them to wait. I wouldn't want to be painting lots of kids on a line and I will be watching this, for example - this is not "working" time, this is play and learning time for us. One of the purposes of the jam is for us to get the opportunity to practice what we need to practice, learn new tips, tricks, ideas, that we ordinarily would not get a chance to on our gigs. I don't want to feel that I am at a gig and have to paint fast, and I'm sure none of you want that, either. Bring your kits (brushes, sponges, spray bottle, cup(s), mirror, baby wipes, hair clips, etc.). Do not worry if you cannot bring it all. Enough of us are "tackle tarts" - and I, for one, would be willing to share a few things. If coming by train, you certainly don't have to lug a heavy kit, just bring the basics. American Face Painter magazine, produced by Jodi Carr, will be available at $6.50 ea. We will have a nice space in which to have our jam, tables and chairs provided in a central location that most people can get to. Anything else I might have left out? Please write to me. If you have not already written to me that you are coming, please do so, so that I can put you on the FP Jam Mailing list. So far, there are at least 10-15 people coming, and it's still early. It could easily go to 20, so with models and Fantasma Magic customers coming, it could add up to 30. ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT A REQUIREMENT, I WOULD APPRECIATE THAT YOU LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING. Try to come early, but if you cannot, try for 5:20 PM so that at the very least, you can catch Christopher Agostino's demo and then face paint with us the rest of the time. Bring cash, because anything sold in the room, which will be VERY minimal , would be on a cash basis. Looks like we will have enough kids/models coming through because of Fantasma's advertising of this jam!!! Looking forward to this - it has been a LONG time coming. Regards, Deva Sorry if I have repeated a few times the same thing in this E-mail - as it has now become a collection of prior E-mails announcing this event. UPDATE: The 30% off on Fantasma Magic's Mehron paints are for specific type of faces - "Clown" or "Bruises" - those types of paints, not the cake paints I was hoping they would have on sale, and they have minimal supply and the sizes are small. Bring your camera, your kit, your brushes, sponges. Might I suggest that you somehow mark your brushes? They get notoriously "lost" at jams and conventions. I can feel that this is going to be gearing up for a really wonderful, well-attended jam.
