Thanks for your interest. I like the idea of a GSoC student working on
the project but I'm not sure that I could identify any one project that
would be good to work on. Things are in flux at the moment:
http://www.reactivated.net/weblog/archives/2008/03/asynchronous-fingerprint-scanning/

My roadmap is approximately:

1. Complete, stabilise and release libusb-1.0
2. Improve libfprint asynchronous API
3. Complete, stabilise and release libfprint-0.1
4. Complete, stabilise and release fprintd
5. Work on better application integration

Integrating into KDE really falls under 5, but that item depends on
everything below it, and all that stuff is volatile and subject to being
reworked.

I guess GSoC requires well-defined project goals and I'm not sure that
you could pick any from that given the dependency chain, unless you were
to focus on the only independent item: libusb.

I also am not sure how much progress I will make between now and the
start of the summer, and over the summer itself. I will be working full
time over the summer so would not be able to give you specific attention
either.

Interesting idea. Another way to improve accuracy is to take multiple
scans of the finger during enrollment, assess their quality, and only
use the best one.

Yes, a much wanted feature. A proper implementation of this depends on
everything I listed above. fprintd would have some kind of
configurable/pluggable storage system, with one such storage module
being a systemwide fingerprint database.
