Binary blobs of fingerprints can be stored in different backends. I'm
planning on getting a few people to come up with a schema to add it to
the Red Hat/Fedora LDAP server.

But that would need somebody to write an LDAP storage backend to
fprintd, and rewriting pam_fprint to use fprintd.

I'll probably get to the latter when I receive a more featureful device
to test with.
