Hi, I would like to join you this Saturday. What parking lot are you meeting at? I am interested in learning more about the goings-on at Callahan since we are abutters and a part of this system of natural areas. Laura Mattei Sudbury Valley Trustees

Hi folks, I got a call from Cary VandenAkker - Parks Supervisor. Don Stoddard, who's correct title excapes me but I believe he is the Regional Director, visited Callahan last week. Don was very concerned at the amount of feces - dog poop - in the area immediately surrounding the Parking Lot, toward the large sign, and near and on the trail leading up to the earth Dam. I think that someone might have gone into that area and picked up some of it already as my wife checked it out and said it wasn't bad. I'll look it over today. In any case, every spring we have the same set of issues. This year is a littel worse than the past years, as there are more people and dogs and bikes using Callahan than ever before. To some extent, how we handle ourselves and "break in" newcomers this upcoming summer season will have much to do with Callahan's future. So a few things. 1. Let's have a clean up day. Saturday March 16th at 10 AM we can meet at the parking lot. I'll bring bags. You might want to bring something to pick stuff up with, a shovel or a tool you can stab trash with, and bring a pair of gloves. If only a dozen of us can show up we'll have 6 teams of two and can cover a lot of the trails plus get much or all of the poop near the parking lot. Maybe at noon or 1 we can go for Pizza or Sandwiches? Please drop me a note if you can make this!! Thank you! 2. Cary and Don are mostly concerned about keeping the area around the Parking Lot, sign, and first portion of the trail pretty clear. Cary is making an effort to ensure that there are always plastic "mitts" in the dispenser for us to use. The mitts are NOT biodegradable and should not be tossed in the woods. Houda has picked up 4 of them in the last two days, which she thinks is ghastly. Once the dog is over the earth dam so long as the poop is 5 or 10 yards off the trail there is no concern. 3. I know it's hard but we need to set the example and we need to screw up our courage and tell other dog walkers too! 4. This also goes for Bike Riders. The Sudbury Valley Trustees land is a no bike zone and we need to educate the riders. Also, if we can find a way to persuade them not to ride when it is muddy (or to walk around the mud) it will reduce the erosion and rutting. Any ideas here? Does anyone know any of the regular riders who might help out? Thank you all very much! Joel A.
