Below is a letter from Larry Schmeidler of FIMBY fame. Opposing the heroin clinic is a very worthwhile thing to do. It should not exist anywhere except at the hospital.
The text of the meeting announcement is below as well. The Word version of the announcement is available at http://frambors.syslang.net/fimbymtgspectrum5-29.doc for the txt impaired. Please come to this meeting. Tell all your friends. If they can put a heroin clinic downtown as an educational institute, then they can put it next door to you too. -- -Time flies like the wind. [EMAIL PROTECTED] ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Sun, 26 May 2002 12:43:04 -0400 From: Paula and Larry Schmeidler <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Methadone clinic Hi Steve: As dicussed early this morning, I am attaching a meeting notice you should have received earlier re organizing the downtown and other neighborhoods against Spectrum's application for a clinic on Howard Street. Please urge your friends and colleagurs to attend since we will be strategizing to set up a public hearing as well as action on upper government (state and federal) levels to flank the selectmens' move to settle with Spectrum. Cntrary to the MetroWest Daily News, Debby Blumer definitely got a commitment from the CEO of the hospital for space. The News has an axe to grind in favor of Spectrum and quotes only from George the King et al. We feel that we now have them by the cajones and we are pressing ahead. Any questions, just contact us. Date: Wednesday, May 29, 2002, beginning at 7:30pm Place: Portuguese Club: corner of Arlington & South Street, Downtown Framingham This meeting has been called by F.I.M.B.Y., a town-wide umbrella group dedicated to helping neighborhoods save neighborhoods. The purpose: to set a date for the promised public meeting on Spectrum's application for a methadone clinic and to decide what steps are necessary, including legal, to support Town Meeting, the neighborhoods and downtown businesses in opposing the location of the clinic anywhere but at the MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham. We can't go back to the 1980s, with a downtown Spectrum clinic (licensed or not), vacant stores, boarded up buildings and blighted areas. Framingham's wellbeing depends on the health of its downtown, and not the wealth of a drug dispenser. Attendees will include: Town Meeting Members, representatives of neighborhood groups and organizations, town-wide groups, downtown business owners (and their employees) and interested citizens. Speakers will include: Richard A. Gardner; his firm conducted a study for the U.S. Department of Justice to determine if there is a relationship between the design of a city and crime. The question he will answer is: Can it be shown that methadone clinics can and do create crimes in otherwise safe areas? Your State representatives and State Senator will be asked about present state legislation that passed and will prohibit methadone clinics in most areas. Directions: Going south - cross railroad tracks and either take: The first left off Hollis Street onto Irving Street. Second intersection turn left onto Arlington Street. The club is on the right?.or Just after crossing the tracks, turn left on Waverly Street and take the first right off Waverly onto South Street. The second street is Arlington Street and is on the right- hand corner. For further information: contact FIMBY (Framingham is My Back yard) Laurence M.
