I spoke with Fire Chief Mike Smith yesterday. The concerns that I had were as follows:
1. I was not satisfied with the siren blasts that were supposed to happen on Wayside Trails. They all say they happened, but I only heard them on the first and last day of blasting. 2. All of the abutters did not receive notice as they were supposed to. 3. The sizes of the charges were so large that I could feel the shock wave pass through my house, bounce off of where it went and then pass back towards the blast side for a return trip. In response to items 1 and 2, he says that he will keep his eye open for the permit when it get in. Currently, the permit has not yet been applied for. Regarding item three, he had some very interesting information: A skilled blaster will set the site up so that it will be done in one big blast versus lots of small blasts. Apparently, the impact to water tables can be minimized this way. I personally am very grateful for this information, as it is counter intuitive to what I had previously been led to believe. The Chief is now aware that if any homes are to lose their water because of blasting, it is going to be on Carter Drive, and he will keep a closer eye on how this permit unfolds. The neighbors, on the other hand, should definitely follow up with questions and concerns both before, during and after. Clearly, this is a very fragile area and needs to be handled with just a touch more care than what we have come to expect from the developer. -- -Time flies like the wind. Fruit flies like a banana.
