Ed.: In response to Irene DelBono's memo that Natick's end of the grant money is probably unnecessary and as such would not be granted.  Without Irene's permission, I didn't want to put her memo here, but I think you get the point.

You make a good point, Irene.  It occurs to me that we might better accomplish our goal by showing those who want to sell this land where they can get grant money.  Why are we chasing grant money for a project that requires almost none?

It seems clear that this parcel of woods has been earmarked as the funding source for some pet project or other in the minds of those who want to sell it.  If someone has in mind that these woods can be sold off and the proceeds will benefit Tercentennial Park for instance, then maybe they should just apply for a grant for the park.

I think Mr. Kahn was right in saying this whole process needs to be more public than it has been.  Many of us are left with the nagging feeling that there are specific plans for this parcel and the townspeople are not being let in on them.

There are at least five different versions -- all of which claim to be directly from the EMTs -- of the famous injury that took place in those woods and none of them supports the "liabilty" issue we keep hearing about.  The woods are not a liability -- the DPW junk that has been dumped in them is. And we can stop that any time we want to.  And a selectman's attempt to tell townspeople to butt out of town affairs was a startling feat of mental gymnastics.  So much of the argument against keeping the woods intact has been defensive, illogical and clandestine, that we are left with the feeling that someone has something up their sleeve.
