So far I have three stewardship opportunities this spring and will forward more as
they develop, hopefully some will involve Wittenborg Woods.

Garden in the Woods

  HAPPY SPRING TIME

Dear Work Party Volunteers,
Spring is coming at last, and we're heading out into the garden to celebrate! Please
join us for either of two fun mornings of garden clean-up as we prepare for opening
day on April 12th. Our April work parties will be held on Saturday, April 5th from
9:00-12:00 and Friday, April 11th from 9:00-1:00. On both days we will plan to work
outdoors, so please wear appropriate clothing and footwear, and if you have a favorite
pair of gardening gloves, please bring those along, but if not, gloves as well as all
tools will be supplied. We will take a short break mid- way through the morning and
enjoy some tidbits complements of Garden in the Woods.

Please meet in front of the Horticulture Building, in the back parking lot. I look
forward to seeing you all again this year, and if you would kindly take a moment to
let me know if you can join us and what day, I would be most grateful. Also, if I can
answer any further questions about the work party, please do not hesitate to contact
me. If you need assistance with directions, please call me or check our web-site at
www.newfs.org Thanks so much for helping to make Garden in the Woods look beautiful,
Sincerely,
 "Pam Thomas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

AMC Trail Partners - M.D.C. Brook Farm Historical Site

What: Trail Layout and Clearing

The day's trail work is to construct a new section of a self guided interpretive trail
being developed at Brook Farm. We will be laying out the route of the new section,
brushing the pathway, and clearing the treadway.

Where: M.D.C. Brook Farm Historical Site
670 Baker Street, West Roxbury, Mass.

Brook Farm, like Fruitlands in Harvard, Mass., was a utopian community that grew out
of the Transcendental movement. It was founded by George Ripley in 1841 as an
educational association where physical and intellectual labor were paid at the same
rate for work. Early members in this venture of individual reformation included
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dana, and Isaac Hecker. An influential reform journal,
The Harbinger, was published weekly at Brook Farm from 1845 to 1849. A fire in 1846
severely damaged the main building and effectively ended the colony's life because it
lacked the funds to rebuild. The society's dissolution in 1847 was seen as a failure
of the intellectual idealists to carry through on their plans for societal reformation.

When: Saturday, April 26, 2003 9:00 A.M. - 12:30 P.M.

M.D.C. Clothing should be appropriate for the weather. Leather work gloves and boots
are recommended for hand and foot protection. We work rain or shine.
