Ok, so now I have some questions and comments. I admit I only scanned the pro-railtrail doc, so I may ask some questions that have already been answered.
1. How much will the initial work cost and how much is grant funded? A pretty large and seemingly expensive price range is given in this report and I'm curious if everyone agrees with it. 2. How much will on-going maintenence cost? Are there on-going grants for any of this -- especially in these hard times? Another large and expensive price range is given and again I'm curious if everyone agrees with it. 3. Do any of the communities that have implemented a rail trail track the increased cost of insurance and related claims? 4. Same question as (3) for crime statistics. 5. What local community has the oldest trail and how old is it? What are their experiences? 6. This report makes the comment that the trail would only benefit a few people while being an "extraordinary amount of fiscal hardship on the Town". On the very same page, it talks about 6000 users per day (the number comes from Lexington's usage). That doesn't seem like a small number of people benefiting. Later statistics from Weston support the notion that this will serve a reasonably large population. 7. 2.8 miles of a 24 mile trail is 10%. That seems significant to me. It is nice to know that it won't break up the trail though. 8. I would expect that all motorized vehicles would be illegal including snow mobiles. 9. Regardless of the costs, the report does pose excellent questions about how we will afford maintenence of the trail. I am concerned about the town adding services that it can't maintain. This is particularly bad thing to do in the school system, but is also a bad thing to do to the rest of the town. These questions will have to be very well answered to earn my vote. 10. The report also poses an excellent point about the proximity of the trail to Hemmingway School. Are there other schools that would share this concern such as Potter Road or Cameron? Has this been a problem with the Carol Getchell trail that runs behind both Stapleton and Cameron? Have other communities had a problem with this? 11. How is the Carol Getchell trail in Saxonville maintainence paid for (I think the Friends of Saxonville raise money every year)? It's a smaller trail, but has the similar issues. 12. The pro-rail trail memo talks at length about working with the abutters and gaining their support. I hope the supporters of the rail trail have taken this good advice to heart. I expect to see strong support from the abutters if it comes time for me to vote on this. Regards, Andy Limeri TMM Precinct 1 --- "Steven W.
