I once worked (briefly) for a company that was using Fmbatch to generate books nightly but refused to update to fmbatch 5.5 from fmbatch 5.0 for 'validation' reasons. This meant that if a book generation failed it just failed to generate the book and PDF and posted an error, usually an unresolved creo. They were using more a more advanced version of FM on both Windows and SUN machines and the repositories were MIFs (thus no problem opening the files from a more advanced version). Fmbatch 5.5 would generate the books, even if there was an error (-noerror option if I recall). Once I got them to switch over we could reliably generate nightly PDFs and the number of pdf working copies we generated nightly allowed the engineering teams to have "current state" docs to work with. Not sure how they handled the validation, but it was definitely worth it as we were quickly playing BACH nightly for hours at a time.
