Thank you very much for your help.
Editing the custom document seems to work. It is
rather tedious, however, to have to remove all
the paragraph and character formats. Otherwise
these will be brought over into the new document
when you create it -- even if you never actually use a tag with TNR in it.
Commercial printers who do "pre-flight" before
printing will "find" TNR etc even if it is not
actually used for any printed
character. Unfortunately, FM's search and
replace for font occurrences is not very good. I
have found that even graphics (such as imported
Tif files) seem to have some font characteristics.
On the other issue about Distiller not liking
truetype fonts. I think I now see where the
problem lies. At some stage in the
FM-Postscript-PDF process, TNR (truetype) is
replaced by Times (type 1), and as this font is
not available to Distiller for embedding (it is
available only as a resident font on my
postscript printer), Distiller crashes the
process. The solution is probably to modify the
default Press quality Distiller settings (embed TNR)
The biggest problem I have with Framemaker is
finding the occurrences of TNR that (eventually) lead to this crash.
