Editing the custom document seems to work. It is rather tedious, however, to have to remove all the paragraph and character formats. Otherwise these will be brought over into the new document when you create it -- even if you never actually use a tag with TNR in it.

Commercial printers who do "pre-flight" before printing will "find" TNR etc even if it is not actually used for any printed character. Unfortunately, FM's search and replace for font occurrences is not very good. I have found that even graphics (such as imported Tif files) seem to have some font characteristics.

On the other issue about Distiller not liking truetype fonts. I think I now see where the problem lies. At some stage in the FM-Postscript-PDF process, TNR (truetype) is replaced by Times (type 1), and as this font is not available to Distiller for embedding (it is available only as a resident font on my postscript printer), Distiller crashes the process. The solution is probably to modify the default Press quality Distiller settings (embed TNR)

The biggest problem I have with Framemaker is finding the occurrences of TNR that (eventually) lead to this crash.
