I don't recall this discussion, but Ctrl-0 is the shortcut to insert
variables, which may be why "0" sticks in your mind. It highlights the
status bar, and you can scroll through until the variable you wish to
use is highlighted, then press enter. This is the same as using F8 and
F9 for Character and Paragraph tags, respectively, or Ctrl-4, 5, & 6 for
conditional text.

Don't forget Ctrl-1, Ctrl-2, and Ctrl-3 for insert, wrap, and change elements, and Ctrl-7 to set an attribute.
