CVS works fine for simple binary file source control.  When I used it
in the past I checked in files when I made a significant revision,
book files only when I made actual changes to the book.  I never
checked in PDFs or generated HTML files -- those just got archived as
release files on their own server.

You might want to let the admin of your CVS server know what you're
planning, however, as binary files in CVS take up a lot of disk space
and they'll need to plan for that.
