Format -> Document -> Numbering -> Continue Numbering from Previous Paragraph in Book. Then, when you define the style for figure or table numbering, make sure you include, in the syntax, something similar to the following: F:Figure <n+>:\ where F: identifies the unique series so that the numbering stays within that style definition.
