I assume your numbering is something like:
1.1
1.1.1
1.2.1
.
.
.
2.1
2.1.1
.
.
.
If you use <$chapnum>.<n+>, <$chapnum>.<n>,<n+>, etc. this reads the
chapter number as the number sequence. The paragraphs numbering
follows along behind.
