You don't really give details of your entire workflow... for instance
if you output to RoboHelp or MIF2go or something else...
But it I were you, given the unpredictable nature of the results and
that you're on an old version, I'd think about adding a step in
production that uses FrameScript to check and convert the variables to
text after the edit cycles are complete.
However, it would probably be worth your while to evaluate the Tech
Comm Suite 2 to see if the newer software and integrated workflow
solves your problem.
