Though this resolves some issues with memory management here and there this approach unfortunately also introduces problems, one of which is bad character spacing. Reducing from 1200 dpi to 600 dpi may not cause serious havoc, but if you reduce resolution any further you'll have very visible artifacts at smaller font sizes (at least in some cases). Hence, if you possibly can avoid reducing output resolution you definitely should.
