Okay,

I have copied my book to oldbook and copied book files to oldfiles. In one file, I have cleaned up master paragraph and charater catalogs (deleted excess) and fiddled with master pages to make them perfect.

Now I'm ready to create a new book, but there are hundreds of cross- references going between book files.

In what order should I do things so that I do not have to redo all the cross references?

It may make it easier if the directory structure is the same as previous and with the same file names
Create the book
Add the chapters
From the book, update all cross references and reference markers
Fix anomalies as required
Save before each new critical step
