Hello Frederik,

I don't know whether you can do this in FM8, but usually the workflow for
translating FM documents (and updated FM documents) in the localization
world has a totally different workflow.
We usually convert FM into MIF then into some format editable under a
translation memory management tool so previous translations are constantly
leveraged. Once translation is complete, we convert back the files and
perform the required DTP tasks.

Hi All,

Is there a way to perform an automatic word count in CMP (comparison)
files, only counting the words tagged "(Inserted)"? I would like to know how
many new (Inserted) words there are in my CMP files so I can calculate the
translation costs for updating a number of FM8 documents.

Best regards,

Fredrik

FM 8 on PC, Windows Vista, 32 bit system, 2.38 GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM.

And Frame is crashing WAY too often. In files it SHOULD be able to handle
nimbly.

Today, e.g., the only FM files open were two document files, both under 200
KB, no books or generated files. CRASH.

There was a 23 MB PowerPoint 2007 (.pptx) file also open, but still, come
ON---this is FRAME here.

Is this a Frame-Vista matter, and if so , does it get better in FM 9 or 10?

Hi Brian,

What are doing when FrameMaker crashes? FrameMaker 8 is typically very
stable.

Brian, you're not stating what patch level you're running (Help > About >
p.number) -- you need to check that against the FM update page on Adobe.com
to make sure you're fully patched.

No, that cannot be done.

Subject: Embed MS Excel File in FM8?

Hi all,

Can I embed a MS Excel file into FrameMaker as a link so that when I convert
it to PDF or WebHelp (via RoboHelp) the Excel file is accessible to the
reader? My research tells me "no" but figured I'd reach out to the FM gurus
of the group to double-check. ;)

We currently use Tech Comm Suite 1.3 (Frame 8, RoboHelp 7) but will be
upgrading within the next month to Tech Comm Suite 3 -- so if it's possible
in the later version, that would be great to know as well.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

You can't achieve that result with the method you propose, but you could put
a hypertext marker into the FM file that would open the Excel file
-- provided that it resides in a fixed location accessible to the person
using the PDF.

I have no advice to offer, but I will say that I?m running F8.0p277 on Vista
with minorly-complex documents and haven?t had anything like what you
describe. Good luck in the fixing.

And one more kinda PS -- I've had trouble with current versions of
Frame opening and saving legacy documents.
If some of any of your files are FM7 files, I would think about saving
the 8 files back as MIFs to clean up any stray characters or bytes,
then opening and saving them as .fm files again.
