Definitely too little RAM is the likely culprit (processor speed may matter too
- how old is your computer?)

Depending on the graphics card you have in your system, some of that 1GB RAM is
also being used-for/overlapped-with the graphics card and reducing the
available memory further.

You need *at least* 2GB (better yet, 4GB) to use FM 8 and higher versions well.
Nowadays, memory is relatively cheap (check out www.newegg.com), so this is a
simple fix.

Of course, with 4GB, it would be better to use a 64-bit Windows OS version.
Since you are on XP32, don't bother adding *more* than 4GB (even if your
computer supports it), since nothing above 4GB can be seen by XP32.

BTW, even with 4GB, some of that memory will overlap the graphics cards, BIOS,
etc., so you will end up with about 2.9 to 3.3GB usable (depending on your
computer make and model, etc.) But this will enable FM to work properly.

Subject: FrameMaker 10 on Win XP32 crashing regularly --anyone else have this
peoblem?

I get irregular, but multiple crashes in a day, which is getting very annoying.
Here's what I know:
It's a bog-standard user manual.
Document is short (<250pp), uses only a few fonts, two conditions, and a dozen
variables.
There are three generated files (TOC, IX, and 1 LOP).
320 referenced graphics (.pngs, stored 1 level below the text files).

I have been trying to use the "Track edits" feature (no, not the "show
changebars", although I have that on as well), and this appears to be the
culprit.
The other possibility is RAM (only 1GB).

So... thoughts?
