If the problem is hard-drive related, I strongly recommend getting GRC's SpinRite. It's a low-level disk repair utility and has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.
http://www.grc.com/spinrite.htm I'm not sure if it would work on an external drive (if it's though a USB interface). If the files are on your office PC, I'd suggest scanning that drive.
