Joe, That does look like a bug (I am able to reproduce).
Suggested workaround: use a Text Frame (button to left of A), instead of a text line. Saving the doc. triggers the action. If additional lines are added with a carriage return, they too will lose that first character when the doc. is saved. This does not occur with Frame 8.
