Richard and Rick,
Guess I should have said I don't want to do math ;-).
Since the software already performs this math to create the columns,
why can't it display the answer?

By selecting the Object Properties item from the Graphics menu, I can
see the width and height of a text frame, the number of columns it
contains, and the gap between those columns, in the Customize Text
Frame dialog. I could presume that if those items are correct,
theoretically the column width is correct. But where can I see the
actual width of the columns to confirm it?
If there are multiple columns, they're equal width. So:
(Text Frame Width - (Side Head Width + Gap) - (Columns Gap x (Number
of Columns - 1)) / Number of Columns = Column Width
HTH!
