Just to update my question from yesterday: I was contacted by Vikram from Adobe Customer support who had me verify that I'd saved the .zip and extracted all files locally. (Turns out I'd double-clicked the .exe from within my WinZip window.) When I followed his suggestion, everything worked as it should. Thank you, Adobe support--this kind of help is wonderful, and a huge improvement over some of my previous experiences.
