Establish an instance of your book number variable somewhere in each particular file and create a second cross-reference to that. It can be hidden somewhere by making it white on the white page if you don't want to see it. When you insert your xref(s) it would be in two parts. "See <x>, starting on page Y of book number ";"Z" first xref targets your para, second xref targets your instance of the book variable regardless of where it is in the file.

I have a variable defined for "Book 1" and "Book 2", and will soon have "Book 3" and "Book 4" (as we expand the book to more Lines of Business) and I have the appropriate variable copied to all files in the applicable book. I want to create a cross-reference format that goes something like "See <X>, starting on page Y of book number Z" ....where X is the heading and Y is the book number variable.. What I can't figure out is to include a variable in a cross reference. What am I missing?
