Probably six of one half dozen of the other. My understanding is that "were" is used to reference something that would not realistically happen, and "was" is for things that could happen from a practical standpoint. One would have to make assumptions about Art's true intentions to decide whether to change it. (I'm trying to resist the urge to use the common and unnecessary phrase, "I could be wrong," because of course I could.)
Plus I like to think of our language as more "evolving" than "devolving." It changes all the time and, although I'm no expert, I think many changes over the centuries have been the result of simplifying or vulgarizing. So, if it's devolving, it's been doing so for centuries. (WAS: anyone looking for a writer?) I hope this isn’t considered too “off topic”. Perhaps things have changed as our American English language devolves all around us, but … might we not better say “if I WERE looking” rather than “if I WAS looking”? That is, is this not an untrue condition or wish, therefore correctly expressed in the subjunctive mood? Serious question … If I’m “behind the curve” here, I’d like to know! Seconding all of Rick's comments, with the bonus that if I was looking for a job or a writer who was better than average with FM, this would be a pretty obvious place to browse or recruit. You get an occasional posts from people offering FrameMaker jobs and those looking for FrameMaker jobs. It's all good. The list is fairly low-volume anyway, and you can easily delete any posts you consider inappropriate. Besides, if I was looking to hire someone, I would want to know that someone as qualified as Jess is looking for a job.
