| Yes, specialization should be approached delicately. One thing to keep in mind: DITA is (in my opinion) nearly as much philosophy as it is content model. Expect to spend some time understanding what the component pieces are, how they're labeled, and get used to looking at things from a topic point of view, rather than a chapter point of view.
