Thanks for the suggestions. They helped me take the right decision. :-) I did not have Reader installed earlier, but after having sent the computer to a shop (due to USB problems and other anomalities) some changes seem to have been made that triggered automatic update of Reader. Perhaps they installed it? And failing to install the update seems to have killed the printer.
I deleted Reader and ran the Acrobat X repair, and voilá! My Adobe PDF printer is here again!
