Not very. The dictionaries I have consulted (Webster's, American Heritage, and MS Encarta) all show "appendixes" as the preferred spelling, with "appendices" as an acceptable alternate spelling. The same applies to "indexes" and "indices". There is no differentiation offered in meaning between the two spellings.
