I was hoping to avoid this solution, but if ya gotta, ya gotta. And guess what - there is a gotcha. One of the columns is narrow, so the 2 word text wraps around. When these 2 words are the autonumber value, they do not wrap around. They are squeezed onto one line and the second work overlays the first word! Any suggestions? FYI, I tried putting \t between the words in the autonumber field - no go.
