It's always a good idea to paste Word text into an empty FM file, then save it out to MIF to clean up hidden characters and non-supported odds and ends...
When you reopen the MIF file in FM, the contents should be ready to go into an existing FM file. You can do the Word paste directly into the FM file and then do the MIF save, but I think there's less chance of corrupting the FM file if you do the cleaning ahead of time.
