Solved: I had edited my maker.ini file, but not realised that Wordpad is not the best tool for the job - it destroyed the file's UTF-8 format, which was causing my problems.
Restored from a backup, and everything is hunky-dory again. So, when editing maker.ini, ensure you use something like Notepad, that doesn't change file types. Martin martin at em-dash dot com
