Hello Shlomo, That's what it was! There was a character format in front of the <$pagenum> building block on the reference page, and it served no purpose (applying a font that should have been specified in the IndexIX paragraph format to start with). Now my page numbers and the line of dots leading to the first one are clickable at last. This feels much better, thank you very much.
However I notice that the index terms themselves are still not clickable, which seems to indicate that the active area only expands to the right of the hypertext marker after all -- unless I missed something else.
