Hello Tracy, We've got a lot of expertise in converting word docs to medium-neutral sources. What we always do is a transformation outside framemaker. We transform the WordML (Word's XML scheme) to the disired DTD or scheme with a XSLT conversion.
The way to go there is the same as you know it, only the technology used is different. You first make an analysis of the source files and map this to the disired DTD (structure). The result will be a conversion table that you need to translate to XSLT syntax (the most difficult part of the job). Hope this helps. I have done a lot of converting unstructured frame to structured frame using the conversion table and wondered whether I would use the same process for word documents? I managed to corrupt every project I created only by continuously making changes in the style mappings from FM to RH and then regenerating. Sometimes the TOC would not generate at all. Has anyone been using RH8 and has anyone been able to get good results? If so what are you doing right? Yes I watched the tutorial Adobe produced on FM9 and RH8, which helped improve my results but it doesn't change the fact that RH8 seems unstable. I've also had repeated crashes when trying to delete variables from a Frame 7 template. It's done it several times. Prior to that, I can click on a variable name, but the confirmation dialog references a different one. I save a lot. I want the bottom of the table in the header to touch the top of the table in the body, but there is a gap that I can't remove. I've tried overlapping the text frames but that covers some of the information. Is there a way around this? Apart from more traditional marketing routes, we're dragging ourselves kicking and screaming into the 21st century by aiming to get exposure on Facebook and Twitter (@tcuk_conf) to name but two. I'm also contacting groups that are appropriate to myself and other tech comms specialists (I'm a Framemaker and InDesign user). If you're interested, please take a look at the conference web site, sign up to the newsletter or register: http://www.technicalcommunicationuk.com/ While the conference is primarily aimed at UK/European delegates, anyone is welcome to attend. These are astounding bugs in what used to be a couple of the most useful tools in FM. Do any of the Adobe developers ever even bother to use their own software? Where was QC on this?? Right now I find myself in the sad position of using Word for documents I would normally do in FM. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if the development of FM-9 was offshored?
